HOW TO SET THE BEAT

If your clock has an uneven tick-tock sound or stops after a few minutes the beat must be adjusted.

Setting the beat of a clock is simple but may require several attempts to be successful.  Following these easy steps will have your clock running properly again in no time.

STEP 1 - Stop the pendulum from swinging.
STEP 2 - Hold the crutch and pendulum hangar together as shown in figure 1
STEP 3 - Gently press on the pallet shown in figure 2 and center it over the escape wheel shown in figure 3.
STEP 4 - Restart the pendulum (remember to over-swing the pendulum).
STEP 5 - Listen to the beat for an even tick-tock sound.
STEP 6 - If the beat is still uneven, repeat steps 1 through 5 again until clock is running smoothly.

NOTE: Antique long case and most all wall clock beats are adjusted by tilting the cabinet or bending the crutch.  You can tilt a long case clock cabinet by adding a shim under a foot to change it's horizontal lean.  Tilting a wall clock is as simple as adjusting it's horizontal degree on the wall.   If a crutch must be bent to set the beat this should only be done by a qualified clock repairman.
